SRU - Two Worlds, One Family

Description

A commission I designed, brought to life by the ever-amazing :iconhoodsun: (he drew this picture based on my design concept as a commission) Depicting a young Avatar Aang and his canonical world on the left, and the college-aged, SRU interpretation of Aang and his modernized world on the right.

While they live in two separate worlds with separate stories, their core 'family' of characters are linked together in spirit, I guess is how I think of it.
(Note: I specifically wanted that street post there, the names on the signs are the last names of Bryan and Michael, the series co-creators)

In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn
You'll find your place beside the ones you love
And all the things you dreamed of: the visions that you saw
The time is drawing near, now; it's yours to claim it all

Son of Man look to the sky; Lift your Spirit, set it free
Some day you'll walk tall with pride; Son of Man, a man, in time, you'll be

'What I Learned at SRU' is my Avatar AtLA/LoK based alternate universe story and art project that tells an original story about a group of college students growing up together and doubles as a tribute/homage and giant narrative reply to the canonical Avatar series. When i first saw this i was amazed by the originality of this deviation. I love the fact that the image is split into two different aspects of the drawing by Aangs staff, and then the traditional tattoos displayed on the flag. The backgrounds play a big part, the green lands and the mountains, complementing the original aang with his robes while on the other hand the roads and buildings, and the way Aang is dressed in this aspect show a more 'common' and 'modernized' , looking up to today's generation. What you could have done better was maybe adding in some of the modern technology to emphasize on the while, like a car, motorbike, or even more people. The work is very neat and there are hardly any mistakes.

On the whole this deviation has received positive feedback and has been done excellently with good use of colour and originality is spot on. <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" title=":) (Smile)"/> Moreover, I love the Momo touch XD
