Commission I ordered from SqueakyE (Tumblr:
ehrola.tumblr.com/) for the revision of my young adult fiction
'What I Learned at SRU' into an original series, currently titled 'What
We Learned at Rokudai.' (uploaded with her permission)  This is a reference sheet of Katrina Kesuk over the course of the story (age 21-22).

Note: Katrina wears glasses, but sometimes she will wear colored contacts (blue) instead of glasses. The crescent moon chain necklace was an heirloom passed down from her mother, who passed away when she was a child.

Katrina is a college student studying English with the interest of becoming a teacher. She is of Canadian nationality and Inuit/Native American descent. Her favorite hobbies include reading, watching TV/movies with friends, and eating snacks while watching YouTube videos of varying degrees of intelligence (she likes to watch stuff like PBSIdeaChannel when she's in a good mood, and stuff like silly animal videos when she's upset). Her favorite books are the Harry Potter series, The Moorchild, and Walk Two Moons. She is the 'Big Sister' of the group, always looking out for those around her. She can be very thoughtful and observant, compassionate and sympathetic, and loyal to a fault; but she also struggles with bouts of depression, anxiety, and can be over-bearing, controlling, or judgmental. At the end of the day, she is often the 'Glue' that holds the group together. She is directly inspired by Katara from Avatar: The Last Airbender.

'What I Learned at SRU' is currently a modern-day Avatar AU project, but since it is far removed from Avatar canon in the first place, I am working to have the character designs tweaked to serve the purpose of an original series. This character sheet will be used as reference material to that end.

The project's full art gallery can be viewed here: destiny-smasher.deviantart.com… The story starts on DA here: destiny-smasher.deviantart.com… and can be read on FF.net here: www.fanfiction.net/s/6417590/1… All art and fiction for the project can be followed on its Facebook page: www.facebook.com/WhatILearneda…

Two things I love about Katrina are that you gave her a normal name and I personally have always liked alliterative names, so the last name also gets lots of points as well, I also love that you didn't try to make her have naturally blue eyes, since those are pretty uncommon with people of color and tend to look rather odd in realistic settings. Her glasses look great and I like the color of her blue contacts, it suits her dark complexion really well.

I love how much variation you got with her hairstyles, since Katara is a character who has many different hairstyles in canon that she can do all by herself and it's pretty realistic to vary your hairstyle, rather than always having same hairstyle. I also love how you took Kataras necklace from canon and made a more suitable for modern setting version for her to have inherited from her mother. I also like that you made it a crescent moon, since it's kind of a homage to the canon series and her waterbending without being totally obvious and blatant. I also like that you gave her a chocker for the homecoming, since it's another nice homage to the canon.

The autumn desing looks pretty normal and practical and suits Katara pretty well personality wise, so I'm assuming that Katrina is also similary practical. The hoodie is really nice and warm looking and I love the denim jacket she wears it under. I can totally imagine modern Kataras favorite color being blue and that she likes jeans/denim because it comes in blue and lasts longer because of the thickness. I also like the simple open hair with the blue hair clips, it's exactly the normal and common everyday look that Katara would have when she doesn't want to bother too much with her looks, but still wants to be presentable. The brown pants make nice contrast with the rest of the outfit, they kind of balance the design with their neutralness. Though I'm bit unsure about the "backpack"/"purse" thing she wears, since she would be carrying lots of books around and a backpack would be more comfortable and thus the one I would see Katara choosing for herself, but maybe you chose this type of "purse" because it's would be close to Kataras watercontainer.

The pyjamas look normal and comfortable which is honestly more important that how fashionable or stylish they are. I do like the blue color and the darker blue collar, button etc. I'm bit unsure about the ponytail, since in personal experience it's pretty uncomfortable to sleep with hairstyles other than open or braided (either a loose braid or two braids).

I like the homecoming dress, the color is nice and since I have understood from American media that there is usually dancing involved having a dress with shoulder straps is more practical. I also like how the "wrap around" front kind of makes the dress a homage to Kataras default outfit from canon. The opera gloves are stylish and fit well with the rest of the outfit. I also like her simple mostly open hairstyle, but those little braids are really similar to hairloopies that they really suit a modern version of Katara well, since the canon hairloopies are maybe bit too strange to wear in a modern day setting. I also like how Katrina has only subtle makeup in this picture and wearing contacts when dressing up makes total sense, since that's how many real girls and women use them, because glasses might not suit fancier outfits as well, and it's more expensive to have different glasses for different outfits than just wearing contacts.

The winter jacket looks really nice and the fur collar suits her looks pretty well since in canon she wears actual furcoats. I don't know what you call those earcoverings in English, but while they look great I find it really hard to understand someone who comes from a place with cold winters actually wearing them. This is mostly because they are pretty impractical and only protect the ears from cold and are hard to get to stay on. Canada does have cold winters, at least as cold as Finland and I haven't ever really seen anyone wearing that type of earcoverings when it's really cold and most people try them once as kids/teenagers and get sick of the impracticality and the fact that they don't really help with the cold all that much. You might also want to give her gloves of somekind, since by the time you need earcoverings, it's far too cold to not wear gloves.

I really like the hairstyle she wears with the spring outfit, it resembles Kataras canon hairstyle, but adjusted to be more normal for modern day setting. I like the shirt/dress/tunic thing she's wearing, it looks comfortable, but is pretty feminine, which suits Katara well, since while she isn't a total girlly-girl, she still likes feminine stuff, so giving her a really feminine casual outfit is great. I like the simple tanktop worn under it and because it's pretty hard to tell if it's a long shirt/tunic or an actual dress I can imagine her wearing anything from tights to leggins to pants with it, which is really good since it really adds to the realism, if you can imagine the clothes being worn in different combinations. The earrings are also nice and the purple actually suits the rest of her outfit better than it would if they were also blue.

The formal dress is really good since it looks like an evening gown, not wedding dress despite the white color. Her hairstyle is really pretty and I like that she pretty much just has mascara and lipstick, since it seems like Katara/Katrina wouldn't be the type to spend all that much time on makeup, so she would learn the basics so she would look good without having to spend ridiculous amount of time getting ready. Is this outfit for a date with Aaron? I noticed that the two of them are the only characters with sheets who have formal outfits and they even kind of match.

I really like the swimsuit/bikini. It's stylish and rather grown up looking without being too sexy or revealing. It kind of reminds me of some olderfashioned swimsuits because of how stylish it is and I love that the bikini bottom has a skirt as a part of it. I like that it has proper shoulder straps so Katrina can go swimming without worrying that it falls off or flashes her boobs accidentally. I also like how Katrina has rather normal breast size and how you made the bikini to flatter such figure instead of making it more suitable for flat/busty body and then trying to force it to fit a normal sized breasts.

I also like the default design, it's good normal everyday outfit, but the jeans look really realistic with all those seams and the shirt is really cute with that penguin on it. The hat also looks great and it's red color makes the mostly blue outfit look more interesting than it would normally be. I also like that she has same hairstyle as what she wore with the formal outfit, but because she isn't dressing up her hair is curlier and messier.

Katrina is very Katara like and it's easy to see that she was inspired by Katara, but the modern setting obviously forced you to make some changes to her backstory and goals. I do feel that Katrinas interest in becoming a teacher is pretty plausible dream for a modern Katara, since in canon she really seems to like teaching Aang and later Korra how to waterbend and has a friendly and encouraging personality that would work well as a teacher.

I also really like how Katrina looks like an atractive but relatively normal looking young woman, since I feel that that's what the canon Katara was mean to look like, rather than the idea that she's the most beautiful woman in the entire world like some fans seem to think. I also like how she has relatively large and wide nose, it makes her really charming and she stands out from the rest of the characters with it. Even Coral/Korra who has similary large nose has rest of her face different enough that it's impossible to mistake them for eachother.
